SURVEY RESULTS

To gain information on people's opinions and preferences of horror films and horror as a genre, my group carried out a questionnaire using 'SurveyMonkey'. 50 responses were collected, and these answers are to be analysed:

This graph shows that the majority of people responded with the opinion that psychological is their preferred sub-genre. This has influenced my group's decision to carry out a horror opening with psychological elements such as the character's dellusions and unstable emotions. The results have shown us that we should definitely avoid crime horror, as this would not be popular with our target audience.

The response to this question on which factors cause the most suspense shows that music is considered the most effective element by this group of individuals. We have decided, as a result of these answers, to have a strong focus on music and lighting to create the desired atmosphere. For example, we want to contrast the lighting of our two different settings. We believe it is a good choice to focus on these factors because it will satisfy the viewer, and also show our competence in using technical codes.

The lack of answers for costumes has encouraged us to keep costumes simple. This will limit distractions from the less important elements of our opening.

This survey response shows that a high majority of people want the victim to be of ages 17-25. Most people who responded to the survey were 16-17. Therefore, we have used this information to pick a victim of the age 17, so that the audience feel he is a relatable character whilst fitting into their desired age range.

This shows that apprehension is a strongly popular emotion of our respondants for a horror opening. Therefore, we aim to hint at the danger that is to come in our opening, so that the audience feels both anxious and on edge and involved with the story line.

Other results included:

  • The greatest result for 'Would you prefer a male or female antagonist' was 36% unspecified - respondants did not seem to have a strong opinion on this matter.

  • 54% of respondants prefer no gore - this response has been taken into account by us, as we feel that gore will not look professional with a low budget and so would not include this feature unless it would add greatly to the effect on the audience.
