Content: Opening features a 17 year old male waking in an unfamiliar empty room with no way out. The antagonist is linked to mythology of the goddess 'Hel'.
Target audience: Teens and young adults, with possible female bias through the use of a male victim
Research: Research has been carried out on a number of horror films and their openings, for example 'The Woman In Black', 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and 'Saw II'. This research, alongside viewings of other horror films, has showed us the conventions of the genre and influenced our final production.
Rationale behind our idea: We aimed to explore abandonement, entrapment and the psychological damage this can cause
Testing success: We intend to find out honest opinions of our opening through the use of a questionnaire on SurveyMonkey. This will allow us to ask a range of individuals who may have different opinions, including people who we do not know so that we get unbiased answers.
Genre conventions: We have followed a number of genre conventions within our mise-en-scene: for example, we have used low key lighting to make the atmosphere eerie and unsettling, and our setting appears as an abandoned, empty room with no way out.
Resource constraints: Some equipment was not available to us, for example a steadicam would have been useful when filming the scene in the therapist's room to follow movement of the characters whilst still contrasting the shaky handheld used in the abandoned outbuilding location. As well as this, we could have benefited from the use of a boom to crisply record the dialogue.
